Canterbury Christ Church receive Alcohol Impact accreditation

Thursday 07-11-2019 - 10:05

We’re pleased to announce that Canterbury Christ Church University & Students’ Union (CCCU and CCCU Students’ Union) have received NUS Alcohol Impact accreditation. This reflects the dedication and commitment of both The Students’ Union and University to embedding social norms of responsible alcohol consumption and building healthier, safer, more productive student communities.

One aspect of their work was the introduction of Street Marshals, set up through incredibly strong partnership work with the University of Kent, Kent Union, Kent Police and Canterbury City Council. The scheme operates in defined residential areas with the dual aims of safeguarding students and local residents as they transit through designated areas of Canterbury at night, and promoting positive community relationships by encouraging students and local residents to behave responsibly whilst walking through these areas.

The partnership also demonstrated their commitment to increase the inclusivity for non-drinkers through the introduction of alcohol-free accommodation and an increase in the number of non-drinking social activities.

‘Alcohol impact work at the Christ Church seems to be really important to both the university and the students’ union. This is really reassuring for as I am a teetotal student and I worry about other people's wellbeing'.’ CCCU student auditor

"We have worked really hard to achieve the accreditation and have enjoyed working alongside various partners, we are encouraged to see the interventions taking shape and starting to show some real impact. We are keen to continue to work with our university and students to introduce more safety measures and progress newer initiatives further." Jamie Harris - President (Wellbeing) 2019-20

‘We want good quality welfare for students across the UK with appropriate and successful support services available to them and that’s what Alcohol Impact is all about.’ Eva Crossan Jory, Vice President Welfare, NUS

Congratulations to all those involved in the Alcohol Impact programme, a great achievement!
